reducing each of the bigger tpls by 10 on X and Y would make the banner considerably smaller and not lower quality very much at all

So I was taking a look at the image files in this wad. I'm new to this but it is interesting. I noticed something odd. I have a really old image viewing program, and look how it shows the .png file! Is that data sitting in the .png file, leftover from the person who made it?

Post Re: GenPlus GX Channel Forwarder
Hey guys, I updated this channel to make it smaller, and now it doesn't crash. I also made some minor changes to suit my preferences. Mad props to diddy81 and his crew for putting this together in the first place.

What I changed:

Banner images changed to either CI4 or CI8, whatever looked best.
The background and arrow are in 16 colour format.
The rest are in 256 colours.
Channel title set to 'Genesis Emulator'.
The sound no longer loops.

I can't tell the difference, on my TV at least. I'm including the .wad in case anyone finds it useful.

(edit)file updated, changed one CI4 to CI8 for quality purposes.(/edit)

(edit2)Seems I can still crash the wii. Even though I can now go back and forth between this and my 'heaviest' channels, (FCEU, etc.) if I visit several channels it still sometimes hangs. I guess the Wii doesn't clear its memory very well when switching channels, because if I view enough of them in a row it seems to get full and crash. Still saved about a megabyte (almost half) by compressing those images though, so I'll run with that.(/edit2)

Post Re: GenPlus GX Channel Forwarder
Hooray, I now have my Wii channels set up for zero crashes ever. I did the same thing to my other channels and saved a ton of space. Here are my results:

usb loader gx - saved 250kb
wiimc - saved 800kb
fceugx - saved 250kb
snes9xgx - saved 200kb
sdlmame-wii - saved 400kb
genplusgx - saved 1000kb

I found that a ton of images looked great in indexed-16colour, most of the rest worked in indexed-256colour, and a handful of 'high quality' images had to be kept in rgb. Everything looks great and nothing ever crashes.

it does that...it looks like the original image and dosen't support transparencies...when you use a better viewer everything all good... :D

@voodoo -awesome work. Feel free to share your edits!

@AML - I dont think it a massive problem, but it's random and kind of cool. Also it means we are potentially storing data we don't need and wasting memory.

Post Re: GenPlus GX Channel Forwarder
I should mention that being too zealous on the image quality has its drawbacks. I use an old low-def CRT television, and my compressed channels all looked nice here. Tried them out on a friend's high-def today and a few of them looked pretty bad. So you can't really get away with as much on good tvs.

I'm going to play around more and see what exactly I can get away with while still keeping it fresh looking in high-def. Most of it had to do with transparency. I originally dropped the alpha entirely and just used indexed colour palettes with one slot for transparency. Maybe if I could do the same but with 16 or 256 shades of alpha? I need to look into the image formats.
